As an Ag. Puisne Judge in Trinidad, Ian Brook tried 11 capital murder cases. Of 34 years call, he now defends and prosecutes general crime, specialising in sexual offences, often with vulnerable witnesses, and medical, regulatory work. He is an approachable, detailed, hard-working, tech-savvy, tenacious, pragmatic advocate, who relates well to a jury, who has good court presence, is popular with clients and commands the respect of the tribunal.

During the 8 years he lived in Trinidad, he defended, mainly in capital murder cases, occasionally acting, virtually pro bono. He was appointed as an Acting High Court Judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago, and held that office from January 2006, until returning to the UK, in late 2008. 3 of the capital murder cases he tried have been considered by the Privy Council:

Ian prosecutes and defends, and, since 2008, has been involved in cases of homicide; rape and serious sexual offences, which have become his forte; drugs conspiracies; fraud; money laundering; assisting offenders; attempting to pervert the course of justice; and general offences of violence and dishonesty.

He has particular experience of conducting trials of sexual offences, both historic and recent, involving young children, those under s.28 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999, and those involving complainants and defendants with learning disabilities or on the Autistic Spectrum.

Ian is regularly instructed to undertake review hearings and fitness to practise hearings on behalf of the General Medical Council.
