Sharon Beattie in successful prosecution of Sunderland Racial Hatred Case

27/09/2019

Following a four week trial at Newcastle Crown Court, the Defendant, William Charlton was convicted of  five offences of stirring up racial hatred.

The offences arose as a result of a series of speeches given by the Defendant at five large scale demonstrations in Sunderland City Centre between November 2016 and July 2017. The speeches delivered by the Defendant purported to be in support of victims of sexual assault in Sunderland but were in fact, as found by the jury, motivated by an intention to stir up racial hatred.
