Alistair MacDonald QC and James Gelsthorpe in prosecution of moors murder

16/12/2021

Alistair MacDonald QC and James Gelsthorpe prosecuted Gol Ahmed Zazai for the murder of Najeebullah Nekzad, who was found strangled in his car, parked in a layby on the moors above Huddersfield in August 2019.  The prosecution alleged that the killers were Najeebullah’s brother, Nasrullah Nekzad, and Nasrullah’s brother, Gol Ahmed Zazai.

The case was complicated by the fact that there was no clear motive behind the killing and the fact that Nasrullah fled the UK shortly after the body was discovered.  Mr MacDonald advised that the prosecution of Mr Zazai could not await the return of Nasrullah Nekzad and he was charged with Najeebullah’s murder.  After a two-week trial which involved detailed analysis of the defendant’s movements and communications the jury convicted him of murder by a majority of 11 to 1.

He will be sentenced in March 2022.
