On 3rd November 2022, Mrs Justice Lambert passed sentence in the case of Andrzej Latoszewski and Agnieszka Kalinowska in what was only the third sentence hearing in a Crown Court in England and Wales to be televised, and the first time that this had happened outside London.
The Defendants were both sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 39 years for the murder of 15-year-old Sebastian Kalinowski, the son of the second Defendant. Over the course of eight months they subjected Sebastian to regular beatings, involving punching, kicking and kneeing, as well as whipping him with an electrical cable and a wooden bed slat. He was found to have suffered multiple internal injuries, which ultimately caused severe infection and then sepsis, from which he died in August 2021.
Many of the assaults were captured on CCTV footage from cameras inside the family home, which was played to the jury during the course of the seven-week trial in June and July 2022. At the conclusion of the sentencing hearing, Mrs Justice Lambert thanked all those involved in the case for the careful and sensitive manner in which the case had been conducted.
