Nicholas de la Poer KC in successful murder prosecution

13/03/2024

After over a month of evidence and five days of deliberations, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts in respect of three men charged with the murder of a seventeen year old. A fourth defendant was convicted of assisting those offenders.

Tony Adams, his son Niall Conaghan and their associate, Dale Haywood were each convicted of murdering Callum Riley, as well as the wounding Callum Spencer, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. Michelle Conaghan, Tony Adams’ partner, was convicted of assisting an offender.

At an earlier stage, three other men, all associates of Tony Adams, had pleaded guilty in relation to their conduct during events prior to the killing.

The case required the jury to consider self-defence in the context of a ‘householder’.

Nick led Philip Barnes of 9 St Johns Street Chambers. They were both instructed by Rebecca Macauley-Addison of the CPS’s Complex Case Unit.
