27/09/2024

Ashleigh Metcalfe and Gabrielle Wilks have successfully prosecuted a care home manager and care assistant who have been found guilty of ill-treating seven elderly and vulnerable residents within their care. The case concluded yesterday with unanimous verdicts on all counts and touched upon the ill-treatment of residents at the now-closed Riddlesden Rest Home in Bradford

The jury heard evidence from a number of former care-workers who had witnessed the systematic abuse of seven different elderly residents, some suffering with dementia. The abuse involved behaviour which ranged from taunting and humiliating comments through to physical violence. Residents were also sometimes denied important medication and routinely locked in their rooms.

Both defendants were unanimously convicted on all eleven counts following nine hours of deliberation by the Jury.

Ashleigh Metcalfe is an experienced and highly-capable Grade 4 Prosecutor routinely undertaking serious and complex work for the Crown Prosecution Service. She is also a member of the Counter Terrorism Panel of Prosecution Advocates and undertakes the prosecution of regulatory offences on behalf of HSE and various local authorities.

Gabrielle Wilks is one of Chambers’ ‘promising stars’ having joined Chambers in 2022 following the completion of pupillage under the supervision of Tom Storey KC and Eleanor Fry. She is a Grade 2 prosecutor who is frequently instructed in cases involving a broad spectrum of violent offences and is well-versed in handling vulnerable witnesses.

The sentencing hearing in the case has been adjourned until 22 November 2024.
