100th Female Silk Anniversary

01/10/2024

Yesterday evening our Joint Head of Chambers, Sharon Beattie KC, attended a reception at the Royal Courts of Justice, hosted by the Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr.  All female silks were invited in order to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the appointment of the first, Helena Normanton KC, in 1924.  The event was attended by many outstanding and inspirational women and in particular reflected the support and encouragement so necessary to ensure future generations of women attain the rank of King’s Counsel and achieve success in the profession.

On the subject of supporting and encouraging talent, we as a chambers are keen to encourage all potential returners.  We recognise that family demands or other issues mean that over the years many highly able practitioners have left the profession, particularly women.  We would encourage people, who perhaps wonder if they could return, to consider doing so – it is never too late, and for our part we are happy to give whatever help we can.

Sharon Beattie KC shared her thoughts on the matter in an article published in The Times last year: Sharon Beattie KC: The Times – Lost Female Barristers: We Need You – New Park Court
