Paul Greaney KC acts on behalf of Sellafield Ltd in first prosecution brought by the Office for Nuclear Regulation under the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003

Sellafield Ltd is responsible for the safe and secure operation and clean-up of the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria.  The Sellafield site covers six square kilometres on the west coast of Cumbria and is the location of more than 200 nuclear facilities.  It is the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world. Sellafield admitted three offences under the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003 relating to cyber security.  Sentence was imposed by the Chief Magistrate, who noted the significant improvements that had been made since the date of the offences and accepted that Sellafield had not in fact been the subject of any effective cyber-attack.  A fine of £332,500 was imposed.
