Geraldine Kelly, led by Michelle Colborne KC was instructed to represent a defendant who was an Iraqi National and had been charged with conspiracy to commit female genital mutilation in Iraq and forced marriage.
This was a test case for conspiracy to commit an offence abroad.
The case involved cultural and jurisdictional issues, requiring an in-depth analysis and understanding of whether FGM constitutes an offence Iraq.
The trial was heard at Nottingham Crown Court and lasted 3 weeks.
