Tom Storey KC leading Christopher Rose – Five men convicted of manslaughter after trial at Bradford Crown Court

04/12/2024

Tom Storey KC and Christopher Rose prosecuted this trial of six men accused of killing Ian Staves in his home in the village of Wootton, North Lincolnshire.  The men had formed a plan to burgle his house, suspecting that there might be Class A drugs inside and intending to steal them.  Mr Staves was present at the time, and was subjected to a violent assault, in which he was strangled and possibly also smothered by his assailants.  The accused men, who were mostly based in Hull, had made a reconnaissance trip to his home address, and had made careful plans for their attack, which included using a stolen vehicle disguised with false registration plates, and attempts to avoid detection from their mobile phone data in various different ways.  Mr Staves’ attackers left his body lying in such a position as to make it appear to the casual observer that he had suffered a drug-related death, rather than dying as a consequence of the assault upon him.  Sentence is listed to take place on Friday 6th December 2024.

Tom Storey KC and Christopher Rose were instructed by Zoe Nixon of the Crown Prosecution Service.
