Geraldine Kelly KC prosecutes murder case at Bradford Crown Court

05/09/2025

Stephen Lawton, a former soldier, stabbed his partner in the neck, as she lay in bed.  Stephen Lawton claimed he was only guilty of manslaughter, after he lost his self-control, following 5 years of abuse from his partner, which included her allegedly mocking him for suffering from PTSD.  The prosecution’s case was that there was no loss of self control and that Stephen Lawton was lying about how his partner had treated him, to bolster his false defence.  The jury convicted him of murder.  The sentence will take place on 6.10.25.

Senior Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said:

“Michelle Egge-Bailey would still be alive today if Lawton had not stabbed her. Lawton then left her to die. It wasn’t until he phoned a friend and told them she was dead it was reported to us.  This conviction highlights the tragic consequences of violence against women and girls and domestic abuse. I would urge anyone in this situation to report it to us, or other agencies so we can safeguard victims and bring offenders to justice.”
