Today marked the start of the Omagh Bombing Inquiry’s Chapter 3 oral evidence hearings. Over the course of his opening address, Paul Greaney KC, Counsel to the Omagh Bombing Inquiry, set out the objectives of Chapter 3 and the evidence that would be heard. The Chapter 3 oral evidence hearings will take place over the next four weeks and a fifth week, which will be in November.
Chapter 3 is concerned with the attack on Omagh on 15 August 1998. As a result of that attack, 29 people and two unborn children were killed. The objectives of Chapter 3 are to seek to establish how the attack was carried out and by whom. The latter of these objectives is particularly important given that no-one stands convicted of participation in the attack.
In his opening address, Paul identified a number of individuals whom he described as forming part of the Inquiry Legal Team’s working hypothesis as to who carried out the bombing. His address also set out the interconnected strands of evidence which underpin the working hypothesis.
A number of expert witnesses will be called during Chapter 3, including: a multidisciplinary panel of forensic scientists, led by Professor Angela Gallop; an expert in cell site analysis; an expert in warning calls used during the Troubles; an expert in Violent Dissident Republicanism; and, an expert in the manufacturer of bombs, from the Forensic Science Laboratory.
