David Outterside has represented clients in numerous high-profile, serious and complex criminal cases across the country, both for the prosecution and the defence.
David is a heavyweight criminal barrister with a focus on matters involving fatality, attempted murder, manslaughter, organised crime, drugs, large-scale conspiracy and firearms. He is CPS Level 4 and has undertaken a significant amount of work for the Complex Case Unit. He has made regular appearances in the Court of Appeal.
David has an excellent reputation, particularly in front of the jury. He has worked with and opposite Silks as a leading junior in complex cases. He impresses professional and lay clients with a direct, thorough and strategic approach to any jury trial. He has a robust courtroom style and is known for his strong and succinct speeches, which cut to the heart of the issue. He is also valued for his sensitive handling of difficult cases involving vulnerable witnesses and defendants.
Recent instructions in jury trials include a single punch manslaughter case, a defendant serving a life sentence who tried to cut off another inmate’s head, a drive-by shooting and road rage murder.
Many of David’s cases attract attention from the national media, including this case in 2024 involving a county lines drug network.

Attempted murder. Prosecution. The Defendant suddenly appeared in the kitchen of a house of multi occupancy armed with a knife and tried to stab the Victim to death. Complex issues around the presentation of injuries and telephone evidence preceded this plea to attempted murder.
Attempted murder. Prosecution. In a street confrontation the Defendant pulled out a stanley knife and stabbed the Victim repeatedly, including to the neck and chest. Tried by HHJ Ward at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Manslaughter. Prosecution. This 16 year old Defendant, with a cognitive age of 13 years, killed an 82 year old pensioner by punching him once at the Derby bus station. The attack happened in broad daylight. The trial involved complex audio expert evidence, CCTV, and live testimony from a number of civilian witnesses who saw various parts of the incident. A complicated youth sentencing exercise. Prosecuting a Silk. Tried by HHJ Smith KC at Derby Crown Court.
Attempted murder. Defending. The Defendant was serving a life sentence at HMP Frankland, County Durham, when he suddenly attacked a fellow inmate and then tried to cut off his head. Remarkably, the victim survived. The Defendant faced other indictments of s18 on a prisoner and an attempted s18 on a prison officer. Before HHJ Adkin KC at Durham Crown Court.
Murder. Defending. After a ‘road rage’ dispute this Defendant pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed a driver to death in his vehicle. Led by Bryan Cox KC in this trial lasting 3 weeks. Tried by HHJ Crowson at Teesside Crown Court.
Conspiracy to murder. Defending. Two separate drive by shootings a month apart, including the ‘Das Kino’ shooting in Nottingham. The Defendant rode up to his targets on a scooter and discharged several rounds at his victims from a pistol. Led by Michael Auty KC in this trial lasting 6 months. Tried by Mr Justice Morris at Nottingham Crown Court.
Murder. Defending. Represented a teenager in this five Defendant trial. Torture, robbery and murder of a man in his own home. Led by Peter Joyce KC in this 2 month trial. Tried by Mr Justice Jay.
Murder. Defending. Represented this vulnerable client with learning disabilities. Accused with another Defendant of manufacturing weapons in HMP Lindholme and stabbing a fellow inmate to death. Led by Malcolm Swift KC. Tried by Mr Justice Julian Goose.
Manslaughter. Prosecution. Two Defendants got drunk with their Victim on Christmas Day and left him in a freezing Leicestershire field late at night where he ultimately died. Led by Greg Dickinson KC. Awarded red bag. Tried by Mr Justice Butterfield.
Leading Ben Whittingham. Defending. Conspiracy to supply heroin and cocaine across the UK. Almost a million pounds worth of class A drugs found. The review and presentation of complicated digital evidence in this 5 week trial. Ongoing.
Leading Oliver Connor. Prosecution. Instructed by the Complex Case Unit. Conspiracies to traffic children for drug dealing and class A supply. All 9 Defendants were ultimately convicted including the main Defendant, who gave evidence in his own defence during this 5 week trial. The presentation of complex telephone evidence. Less than 1 gram of heroin and crack cocaine were found by police in the whole investigation. The convictions were secured against this large-scale drug dealing network by presenting evidence of at least six separate county drug telephone lines and a further fifteen separate relevant mobile phone numbers established in the investigation.
Leading Ben Whittingham. Defending. Conspiracies to endanger life with a converted pistol and dealing heroin and crack cocaine. This 19 year old Defendant was accused of working with others to take over a prolific city centre class A drugs line. The Prosecution alleged that the resulting gang turf war led to the murder of a member of a gang, to which this Defendant belonged. Within an hour of the murder this Defendant and three other men pulled a pistol on a rival gang member who is now serving life for the initial murder.
Conspiracy to supply class A drugs and modern slavery. Defending. Successfully mounted a legal argument which stopped the counts of modern slavery against this Youth Defendant (17) half way through the trial.
The manufacture of firearms (s16 Firearms Act 1968). Defending. The 6 Defendants were importing blank starting pistols and converting them into prohibited handguns for sale to criminal gangs. Defending one of the two lead Defendants who were conducting a ‘cut throat defence’ against one another in this two month trial. The other lead Defendant was represented by Silk.
Drug supply. Defending. Two Defendants accused of offering to supply cocaine to a student. An argument developed whereupon the co-Defendant punched the Victim and killed him. Represented this Defendant for offer to supply only, but a very sensitive trial.
Assisting Firearm offences and perverting the course of justice. Defending. Two men kneecapped a rival drug dealer with shots from a handgun, then sought refuge with this Defendant.
National supply of firearms, class A drugs & money laundering the proceeds. Defending. This Defendant was accused of playing her part in a National network supplying heroin and live firearms and ammunition. The trial involved cross examination of analysts and experts on complex telephone and covert Encrochat evidence.
Firearms. Defending. Three Defendants drove into a housing estate and discharged a shotgun several times as a warning to rival drug dealers.
Violent disorder. Defending. In this 15 Defendant trial which lasted 3 months, two rival groups were blaming one another for a serious instance of disorder. 5 v 10. Representing the lead Defendant of the smaller group. Leading a ‘cut throat defence’ against 10 Defendants.
Historic child rape. Prosecuting. A campaign of rape and sexual abuse by this Defendant when he babysat for the boy over several years in the 1980’s. The Victim came forward in his 30s and complained of the abuse. Authorities took no action. The case was later resurrected and prosecuted. Prosecuting a Silk. Complex arguments of abuse of process and ‘doli incapax’, as well as sensitive witness testimony.
Child sex offences. A ‘section 28’ cross examination of three separate child witnesses.
Rape. Defending. The Defendant and Victim were said to have got drunk together. At the end the night the Defendant raped the Victim whilst strangling her to unconsciousness, causing significant bruising to the neck and shoulders. The trial involved expert medical evidence as well as sensitive cross examination.
Defence. Man alleged to have raped his best friend after an evening’s drinking.
Defence. Student accused of choking and raping his ‘casual partner’ in halls of residence at the University of Nottingham.
Defence. Tried by HHJ Coupland. Stepfather raping his stepdaughter from the age of 7 – 20 years old. She bore his child. He made her lie about paternity. Beat and abused her throughout her life. 26 year sentence.
Defence. Tried by HHJ Mayo. Defendant accused of sexually assaulting and raping 3 Complainants. The oldest allegation was a rape in 1972.
Prosecution. This Defendant watched a drunk woman enter her address in Lincoln. Followed her into the flat and anally raped her. Tried by HHJ Katrina Sjolin-Knight at Lincoln Crown Court.
Prosecution. Tried by HHJ Katrina Sjolin-Knight. Defendant accused of raping his partner as she slept and filming it.
Plea. Prosecution. Defendant raped his wife and filmed the ordeal. He tried to cut off her thumb. Sentenced by former Recorder of Lincoln HHJ Pini KC.
Plea. Prosecution. Man attempted to rape a drunk woman who was lying unconscious on a Lincoln street.
Defence. Accused of historic rapes on two Complainants and a recent sexual assault. Tried by HHJ Burgess.
Defence. Accused of raping three child family members. Tried by HHJ Sampson.
Prosecution. Tried by Recorder of Nottingham. Very high profile Nottingham case. Imam of the Sneinton Mosque sexually abused a boy in his prayer class some 30 years or so ago.
Defence. Tried by HHJ Sampson. Rape of Defendant’s biological daughter throughout childhood.
Defence. Tried by HHJ Egbuna at Derby Crown Court. Defendant raped both his daughters from a young age, one of which bore his child.
Defence. Stranger rape on a Derby cycle track in 2001. A DNA hit led to the Defendant who by this time was living at the other end of the Country. Tried by HHJ Sampson.
