Background

Emma Piasecki specialises in criminal law, procedure and evidence.

Emma undertook pupillage with New Park Court Chambers in Newcastle in 2001 and joined as a tenant in 2002. Emma was appointed by Northumbria University in 2010 to pursue her academic interests alongside practice and later took up at full time position at Northumbria. Emma is now an Associate Professor of Law.

Emma’s research focuses upon the use of expert evidence in the criminal justice system, with particular emphasis on the communication of such evidence. Emma has published widely in this area in both legal and scientific peer reviewed articles, book chapters and case notes and has presented in the UK and overseas. Emma’s most recent article, published in Forensic Science International, proposes a framework to assist both lawyers and scientists in the assessment of reliability.

Emma is a case note editor for the Journal of Criminal Law and a member of the editorial board of Law, Technology & Trust. Emma is also an External Examiner appointed by the Bar Standards Board. Emma remains an academic member of chambers.

Emma has recently conducted research with colleagues from Northumbria University to help inform UK policymakers on the use of digital forensics and digital evidence across the criminal justice system.
