Jeremy Barton has built a thriving practice focused predominantly on serious criminal work with a regulatory cross-over.

He is regularly instructed in both private and publicly funded cases in the most serious of criminal matters, including terrorism and explosives, murder, fraud, firearms, drugs conspiracy and serious sexual offences. He has successfully appeared for the first defendant in numerous high profile grooming cases and has a strong track record in successfully defending difficult complex matters.

He frequently appears for the first defendant in multi-handed cases where conspiracy is alleged and is regularly leading counsel.

Jeremy is a versatile and personable advocate who simply does not give up on his case. He is popular with both lay and professional clients and has a confident, calm manner in court before juries. He is particularly good at managing difficult and demanding clients and takes great care in ensuring the defendant and those supporting them come first.

Jeremy has particular knowledge and expertise in firearms legislation and a working practical knowledge of firearms themselves gained from over 30 years of using them.

He is VHCC accredited and a VHCC supervisor, appearing in multiple complex high value frauds involving sophisticated methods of alleged fraud using super computers and mobile telephones. He has become particularly experienced in understanding how evidence of this type can be undermined.

In addition to criminal work, Jeremy in the last 15 years has developed a practice across other quasi-criminal areas including professional misconduct, with a particular focus on use of force cases involving alleged police misconduct.

He has successfully defended in a number of high profile cases and has appeared at every level of misconduct hearing including the High Court on Judicial Review, successfully achieving the reinstatement of a serving police officer in a case that made the national headlines spanning 5 years, successfully overturning all convictions and findings on appeal. Jeremy has appeared on behalf of the medical profession at the General Medical Council defending in a variety of cases of a quasi criminal nature including interim order panel hearings and full misconduct hearings.

Jeremy joined New Park Court Chambers in 2015, having previously spent 11 years in London at 2 King’s Bench Walk.

Jeremy is VHCC accredited and a VHCC supervisor on behalf of solicitor’s firms who are not VHCC approved, allowing them to undertake VHCC work.

Instructed for the defence as Junior Counsel in a multi – handed terrorism case at Sheffield Crown Court.

This case required a working understanding of 3D printing and the manufacture of plastic machine guns, production of ammunition and far right extremist material in general.

The case also involved understanding  and analysing extensive telephone evidence across a variety of platforms and where possible highlighting the weaknesses in such evidence.

Conspiracy to possess firearms with intent to endanger life.

Jeremy has defended in a large number of police discipline matters both in the South and North of England, often instructed by the Police Federation directly.

He has appeared at all levels as Junior counsel at misconduct hearings, on appeal to the police appeals tribunal and to the High Court on judicial review, most notably in the case of Sergeant Mark Andrews who was successfully reinstated in the police force after a 5 year court case during which Jeremy dealt with all matters.

Jeremy has defended successfully (instructed by the MDU) at the GMC on behalf of the medical profession at numerous Interim Order Panel Hearings and misconduct hearings where fitness to practise has been called into question.

Jeremy has acted for the police during coroners’ inquests involving death in custody cases where article 2 has been triggered. He has particular knowledge of the custody procedure and cases where Immunosuppressants have featured in the death.

Jeremy also has a busy Civil practise predominantly dealing with high value asset recovery and finance matters for some of the most prestigious automobile clients in the world. He has particular expertise in dealing with consumer credit, novation agreements and contracts for hire purchase agreements. Jeremy has experience of defending copyright and trademark matters and was employed by British Telecom in-house, advising on matters concerning intellectual property rights.
