Background

Maryam prosecutes and defends in a wide range of cases in the Crown Court including serious violence, fraud, drugs and sexual offences. She is regularly instructed to act as a junior, supporting very senior counsel in large cases which have recently included conspiracy to supply class A drugs, human trafficking, rape and historic sexual offences.

Prior to joining New Park Court Chambers, Maryam was employed by Ison Harrison Solicitors to work on the Hillsborough Inquests and is now developing a strong practice in inquests and regulation. She is familiar with the investigatory processes undertaken by Trusts and regulators following a serious incident and the voluminous documentation usually generated which often includes medical records, risk assessments, expert reports and social care records. Maryam is confident in dealing with expert evidence and her practice in these areas and in crime frequently requires her to cross-examine doctors, nurses, social workers and scientific experts.

Maryam has recently been instructed to represent bereaved families at inquests following the death of a loved-one who had been involved with NHS mental health services.

Maryam also has experience in providing advice to regulatory bodies including the Care Quality Commission and the General Medical Council. She is regularly instructed by the Nursing and Midwifery and Council in applications for conditions of practice and interim suspension orders.

“Maryam's support was excellent and we are very grateful that she was there for us. She was extremely professional, showed tremendous empathy and we could not have asked for a better barrister to help us through the Inquest. We found the Inquest very difficult as it brought back a lot of painful memories. It is really essential for families to have someone that understands the process and can look at the case from a non-emotional perspective. Maryam was very thorough, asked all the relevant questions and guided us through the whole process in an efficient and competent way.”
