Ruth Cranidge specialises in criminal and regulatory law.

Possessing a professional and self-assured court presence, Ruth is instructed in all aspects of criminal law with a particular emphasis on defence work. She is comfortable in front of any tribunal and has experience of representing defendants charged with a wide range of offences including violence, sexual offending and serious dishonesty offences. Ruth has achieved a place on the CPS Advocacy Panel at level three and is also on the specialist Rape Panel. Ruth has particular experience representing professionals such as police officers and nurses, whether in the criminal courts or through specific regulatory misconduct proceedings. Ruth regularly appears in police misconduct tribunals and has represented officers from various forces including West Yorkshire, Humberside, Northumbria, Cleveland, Cumbria, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Ruth has recently achieved a place on the list ‘C’ of the Attorney General’s list of advocates.

Historically, Ruth has been instructed in high profile inquests and played an active role in such inquests as the Selby Rail Disaster and the Clay Pit Lane inquest. In other regulatory work, Ruth is often nominated by the Attorney General to prosecute on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive and is also instructed by other government departments such as DWP, Trading Standards and DEFRA. Ruth is an active member of Chambers’ GMC team and regularly presents to the General Medical Council.

All aspects of criminal work with emphasis on Defence work. Appears mainly in the Crown Court, but continues to represent police officers charged with summary only matters and driving offences. Has experience in all criminal matters, including drugs offences, violent crimes, sexual offences, confiscation proceedings and abuse of process arguments. Has particular experience representing police officers and nurses charged with criminal offences.

Prosecuting and defending in cases brought by various government departments and executive agencies. Has broad experience of appearing on behalf of the Health & Safety Executive both in the Magistrates’ and Crown Court. Recently prosecuted company in near-fatal case where the company were fined £90,000. Has experience of prosecuting on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions, Trading Standards and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Representing police officers at full powers hearings and Police Appeals Tribunal hearings. Has wide-ranging experience in this area having represented officers from various Forces including Northumbria, Cumbria, Cleveland, Humberside, West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Recently appeared on behalf of Detective Inspector in relation to the IPPC conducted Tania Moore inquiry in Derbyshire. Also has experience of representing Ministry of Defence police officers.

Acted on behalf of interested party at inquest into the Selby Rail Disaster, a week long jury inquest and represented Leeds City Council at the Clay Pit Lane inquest.

General common law practice with emphasis on personal injury, including accident at work claims, Highways Act claims, Occupiers’ Liability claims and tripping and slipping claims. Has experience in small, fast and multi-track cases, both conducting trials and making general civil applications such as strike out and summary judgment. Has wide experience of drafting statements of case and advising on quantum and evidence. Has CICA experience, including drafting advices and Schedules and appearing at hearings. Recently led in CICA case where the maximum settlement figure of £500,000 was negotiated.
