Today Iceland was sentenced to £2.5 million fine in a health and safety case.
Following a trial which lasted into the third week and which resulted in unanimous guilty verdicts on both allegations. Iceland were sentenced today today to a total fine of £2.5 million: with £1.25 million being imposed in respect of the risk Iceland exposed its contractors to and £1.25 million in respect of the risk to which it exposed its employees.
The investigation arose out of the death of an independent contractor who fell whilst changing filters on an air conditioning unit at Iceland’s Rotherham store.
Nicholas de la Poer advised pre-charge and represented the local authority, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council at the trial which concluded in July of this year. Following the jury verdicts the case was adjourned to today’s date for sentence.
Having passed sentence, HHJ Thomas QC commended the local authority investigation into the death.
