Jeremy Barton, Adam Birkby and Peter Byrne secure acquittals in million pound fraud case

14/01/2019

Jeremy Barton for the first Defendant and Adam Birkby leading Peter Byrne for the second Defendant, were instructed by Richard Haswell Solicitors LLP of Newcastle.

The Defendants were accused of conspiring to defraud several multi-national private medical insurance (PMI) providers via independent brokers. The Defence case was that both the PMI providers and the brokers were fully aware of the true nature of the PMI scheme, namely that membership was based not upon employment but upon a loose association of shared religion.

Following detailed and specific requests for disclosure, the Defence teams unearthed evidence which not only undermined the credibility of the Prosecution’s witnesses but conclusively established the veracity of the Defence case. Consequently the Prosecution offered no evidence against all Defendants. The issue of costs will be determined at a later date.
