Matthew Donkin, leading Michael Bunch of the CPS, has successfully completed the prosecution of multiple defendants under the title of Operation Elba, for conspiring to carry out a shooting in Newcastle in August 2019.
The prosecution of five defendants, each of whom was represented by two counsel, and a trial running into a sixth week under strict Covid restrictions made this the first case of its kind attempted at Newcastle Crown Court since lockdown, and one of only a few similar cases nationally.
A total of more than fifty individuals were required to attend and be managed for the completion of the case. The trial required particular care in preparation and presentation, the extensive use of technical equipment, remote links for the attendance of advocates, defendants and witnesses along with the use of two courtrooms linked together by live-link at all times to allow full participation by advocates and defendants in the second court.
